About Brow Lift Surgery

A sagging brow can often cause an angry or tired appearance. Surgery to lift the brow (sometimes known as a forehead lift or browplasty) is a popular aesthetic treatment that removes excess skin and fatty tissue hanging over the eyes, which provides a refreshed look to the entire face. A browplasty surgically corrects a drooping or heavy brow with deep horizontal creases, frown lines, and furrows between the eyebrows to give you a more youthful face. Dr. Chris Costa is a plastic surgeon in Las Vegas, NV who performs brow lift surgery on patients of all ages to give them a more youthful appearance. While brow lift surgery concentrates on the brow specifically, it can also have an improvement on the upper eyelid by smoothing excess skin and wrinkles while raising flat or drooping eyebrows. To learn more about brow lift surgery and how it may benefit you, schedule a consultation with Dr. Costa at Platinum Plastic Surgery.

Ideal Candidates

When you grow older, skin elasticity diminishes and causes the upper portion of your face to droop and weigh down your appearance. A brow lift can improve the deep horizontal creases in your forehead, which may be making you look angry or tired. Removing excess skin and a sagging brow will also raise flat eyebrows and make your eyes look more open. Additionally, a brow lift can improve the symmetry of your eyebrows and deep wrinkles or furrows between your brows. You may also benefit from a brow lift if a heavy brow is causing excess skin in your upper eyelids, which may limit your vision or force you to strain your brow muscles so your eyes stay open. During your initial consultation with Dr. Costa, he will listen to your needs and concerns before performing a physical examination. After this, he will be able to discuss his recommendations and create your tailored surgical plan.

Surgical Technique

Brow lift procedures are done under general anesthesia and may be combined with other procedures, like an eyelid lift, to achieve all your aesthetic goals. The incision performed in a browplasty is chosen depending on the degree of skin sag, the length of your forehead, and your hairline. Some of the different techniques that may be used:

  • Traditional Incision
Also known as the open browplasty incision, this puts the surgical incision behind the hairline at the top of the head. The open incision not only conceals scars, but it also allows a certain amount of lift control throughout the surgery. The open incision is good for those with both frown lines and a sagging brow. The traditional brow lift is the ideal incision for patients who are concerned about a receding hairline.
  • Hairline Incision
The trichophytic incision is made directly against the patient's hairline. A trichophytic incision permits more dramatic lift in the brow for patients who have a low risk for hairline recession. It's an ideal approach for many patients to shorten the length of the forehead while raising the brow and heals with a very clean scar that is not visible by even most trained eyes.
  • Lateral Brow Lift
Also called a temporal browplasty, the lateral method starts the incision within the hairline slightly over the temples. A temporal incision permits the outer sections of the brow to be treated and is best for sagging that is visible in the outer brow.
  • Endoscopic Forehead Lift
The endoscopic lift method makes multiple small incisions beyond the hairline and inserts an endoscope, which is pushed to the eyebrow to release its attachments. Using the endoscope's camera, the brow tissue is repositioned with stitches to place the brow in a better location.

What to Expect

The recovery period after a brow lift varies in each patient, but in general, you should experience minimal discomfort. You may notice some swelling and bruising in the upper portion of your face around the eyebrows and sometimes near the eyes. It is also not uncommon to experience some transient numbness in your forehead or scalp. Cold compresses can help to reduce the inflammation. Dr. Costa recommends you sleep with pillows propped under your head for at least two weeks after their brow lift to reduce swelling. You can perform light activities immediately after surgery and are encouraged to be up out of bed the day after surgery. The typical recovery period from a brow lift is around 2 – 3 weeks. The results can often be seen right away, with a refreshed appearance that is softer, more alert, and with a visible improvement in sagging skin and fine lines in the upper portion of the face.
