Liposuction Right

What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a procedure that utilizes a suction technique to remove the fat from specific areas of your body such as your abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, arms, or neck, creating a more shapely appearance. Please keep in mind that this is not a weight loss procedure, but a way to get rid of stubborn fat deposits that won’t go away even with diet and exercise.

There are various Liposuction techniques that Dr. Costa can use for your body contouring treatment:

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent Liposuction, typically performed on patients who need only local anesthesia, usually takes significantly longer than traditional Liposuction (sometimes as long as 4 to 5 hours). The name of this technique refers to the swollen and firm or “tumescent” state of the fatty tissues when they are filled with solution.

A tumescent fluid (a mixture of saline, local anesthetic, and epinephrine) is infused into the fat to help control blood loss and fluid absorption, making the procedure very safe and well-controlled. However, because the injected fluid contains an adequate amount of anesthetic, additional anesthesia may not be necessary.

Ultrasonic Liposuction

Also called Ultrasound-Assisted Lipoplasty (UAL), this technique requires the use of a special cannula that produces ultrasonic energy. As it passes through the areas of fat, the energy explodes the walls of the fat cells, liquefying the fat. The fat is then removed with the traditional liposuction technique.

UAL has been shown to improve the ease and effectiveness of Liposuction in fibrous areas of the body, such as the upper back or the enlarged male breast. It is also commonly used in secondary procedures when enhanced precision is needed. In general, UAL takes longer to perform than traditional Liposuction.

What are the Benefits of Liposuction?

Even small fat pockets can negatively impact your appearance. You may avoid wearing your favorite clothes or feel embarrassed when spending time at the beach or pool. As one of the leading liposuction surgeons in Las Vegas, Dr. Costa has had the pleasure of helping patients for several years achieve the body contouring that makes them feel more confident about themselves. Below, we’ve included some of the benefits we’ve seen firsthand:

  • Liposuction allows you to reduce these fat pockets and create the body you’ve always wanted
  • Surgery is a safe and effective option for improving body contours and enjoying an enhanced look
  • Platinum Plastic Surgery is proud to offer liposuction to make you look and feel confident in your skin

Office Consultation

What to Expect on the Day After Liposuction

This treatment is completed in an outpatient setting using general anesthesia. A small knick is made in the skin so a cannula can be inserted. A cannula is a special tool that makes it easier to loosen the fatty tissue that is being vacuumed out. After the fat deposits have been eliminated, Dr. Chris Costa will take the time to go back over each area to ensure that the tissue appears natural and smooth out any irregular or unnatural areas. The small incisions on the skin are then meticulously closed. Based on the number of sections being treated, your procedure may take several hours. In the separate area for recovery, your post-op nurse will assist you with managing any discomfort and look after your treated areas until you are discharged.

Liposuction Recovery

You may need to stay at home for recovery from liposuction surgery for several weeks based on the number of sections treated and the amount of fat removed. It’s typical to have bruising and swelling for one or two weeks after surgery. The most important thing to do following any surgery is to give your body time to heal and recover. When you decide to go back to your job after your surgery, you should remember to minimize stress and strenuous activity. To increase your strength and stamina, try walking and light workouts as recommended by Dr. Costa. Remember, you may notice some improvements soon after your surgery, but it will take around 2 – 3 months until your new body contour and shape is complete.

Liposuction FAQs

How much fat will I lose with Liposuction?

The amount of fat loss with liposuction varies from person to person. A thorough discussion with an experienced specialist like Dr. Costa can help determine your expectations and outcomes. Remember that liposuction is not designed to remove large amounts of fat, and patients should be close to their ideal body weight, but you should still be satisfied with your results.

Will I have scarring after Liposuction?

All surgical procedures involve some degree of scarring. However, liposuction scars are smaller and are usually placed in locations that can be hidden beneath clothing. Scars usually fade over time if patients take steps to keep them out of the sun and use products like moisturizing lotion. Platinum Plastic Surgery can provide more tips on how to care for your scars.

How long do liposuction results last?

The best liposuction results occur when surgery is accompanied by a regular diet and exercise plan. This is because any future weight gain can reverse your outcomes. Results can last for years as long as your lifestyle remains consistent. Patients in Las Vegas, NV, can return to our clinic anytime for repeat liposuction treatments.

How long until I see results?

While you should be able to notice positive results almost immediately following your procedure, however, depending on how much fat is removed, most Liposuction patients can expect it to take between one and three months to see their final results. This is because your skin needs time to retract and any swelling to subside. You should be able to see very long-lasting results as long as you maintain a proper diet and exercise.

Can I combine Liposuction with other procedures?

Yes! Many of Dr. Costa’s patients choose to combine Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck, Breast Lift, Thigh Lift, Neck Lift, or several other procedures. If you are interested in multiple areas of treatment, please discuss this during your consultation so that Dr. Costa can come up with the best plan for you.

What are the risks associated with Liposuction?

Dr. Costa takes pride in providing his patients with safe and positive outcomes for all his procedures, however, there are always potential risks, such as:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bruising
  • Change in skin sensation that may persist
  • Damage to deeper structures such as nerves, blood vessels, muscles, lungs, and abdominal organs
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Infection
  • Irregular contours or asymmetries
  • Irregular pigmentation
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Persistent swelling
  • Poor wound healing
  • Rippling or loose skin, worsening of cellulite
  • Swelling
  • Thermal burn or heat injury from ultrasound with the ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty technique

While most side effects will heal on their own over time, if you have any concerning or long-lasting reactions, please contact us immediately so that we can help.

Is Liposuction painful?

Liposuction is an overall painless procedure due to the anesthesia, however, you may feel some moderate pain and discomfort during the first few days of recovery. Dr. Costa can prescribe you some medications that will make the discomfort more manageable, but an ice pack or over-the-counter pain medication can also do a lot to alleviate any pain or discomfort.

Why should I choose a board-certified plastic surgeon for my Liposuction procedure?

Choosing the right plastic surgeon for any cosmetic procedure is not always an easy task and there are a lot of factors that weigh in on your decision. No matter who you select to perform your Las Vegas Liposuction, it is imperative that you choose one that is Board-certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), such as Christopher Costa, M.D.

Board-certified plastic surgeons have been extensively trained in both facial and body procedures, have learned how to prevent and handle emergencies that may arise during a procedure, and have developed technical skills and aesthetic judgment. Not only will you have a better opportunity to achieve optimal results, but you can rest assured that your procedure will be performed safely in a professional environment.

What are the differences between Liposuction and a Tummy Tuck?

Liposuction removes excess fat cells from undesirable areas of the body. With liposuction, the surgical incisions are small, and recovery time is minimal. Liposuction surgery performed by itself does not tighten excess skin from massive weight loss or childbirth.

A tummy tuck involves removing excess fat and skin and begins with surgery to correct and tighten weakened abdominal wall muscles (diastasis recti). A tummy tuck’s surgical area is larger, and the incision is longer. Neither procedure is for weight loss, rather they both help boost your body confidence with a slimmer appearance and help you achieve your ideal body contour.

During your consultation, Dr. Costa will perform an examination of your abdominal muscles and any excess skin and stretch marks to determine if a tummy tuck is necessary.

Is liposuction covered by insurance?

Unfortunately no. Since Liposuction is considered an elective cosmetic procedure, it is not covered by health insurance carriers.

How do I prepare for Liposuction surgery?

Our team will provide you with instructions to follow for the days prior to liposuction. Be sure to ask a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgical center and to help assist with postsurgical care. Blood thinning medication, such as aspirin should be stopped before the procedure.

When using general anesthesia, blood work is done ahead of time to ensure you are a good candidate for anesthesia. On the day of your surgery, you will need to avoid consuming food or drink about 12 hours prior to the surgery appointment time.

When can I work out after Liposuction?

You should be able to gradually return to your workout routine after about a week or two post-treatment, but you should always differ from Dr. Costa’s recommendations. You will be able to begin with some casual walking and work your way into more strenuous activities after about a month. You will need to make sure that you have completely healed before starting any ab routines.

How will liposuction affect the appearance of my skin?

Liposuction isn’t a skin-tightening procedure, however, you will notice a mild degree of skin tightening occurring after your treatment. After a few months, you should be fully healed and be able to enjoy a firmer belly. If you are having an excess amount of fat removed, or have a lot of sagging skin, you should consider a Tummy Tuck. Dr. Costa will offer his best suggestions for your surgery during your initial consultation.

Can fat cells come back after liposuction?

No! The great thing about Liposuction is that after you have fully healed, those original fat cells won’t come back. As adults, we have a fixed number of fat cells. However, our remaining fat cells can enlarge and shrink with weight gain or loss. We encourage all patients to continue their routine exercise with a proper diet to maintain results, otherwise, you may notice fat build-up in the untreated areas of your body.

Should I lose weight before Liposuction?

While there is no specific weight you should reach before getting liposuction, a key pre-liposuction tip is to reach your target weight (or at least be close to it) several months before your surgery. Remember that reaching your goal weight is different from achieving your ideal body. Dr. Costa will be more than happy to offer you his opinion when you come in for your consultation.

How much weight will I lose from Liposuction?

Most patients can expect to lose an average of five pounds of fat after liposuction, weight loss is not the ultimate goal, however, some lucky patients have lost more! The goal of liposuction is to remove stubborn fat for better body contouring and slimming down those areas that just don't seem to respond to diet and exercise to help you look and feel your best.
